Yi David Yang aims to bring music to everyone. He thinks most people love the marimba, they just haven't had the chance to hear one yet.
He has worked with and premiered pieces by composers in the San Francisco Bay Area and New England Area. Yi is a champion of contemporary pieces, arrangements, and transcriptions for the marimba, and loves lugging it around to various venues, including concert halls, hospitals, nursing homes, breweries, and other living rooms.
Yi has studied with Jack Van Geem at the San Francisco Conservatory of Music and Nancy Zeltsman at The Boston Conservatory, where he completed his Master's Degree in Marimba Performance.
YDY Mallets began with the curiousity and fascination with the yarn patterns at the top of a mallet, and the desire to explore as many sounds as possible. After years of experiments and practice creating mallets for specific purposes as well as recreating sounds precisely, Yi began wrapping mallets for colleagues around him and started accepting payment for the high-quality work at their request.
The personal, hand-made approach to each mallet is part of YDY Mallet's mission to equip each musician with their own sound that they love.
